What is Adaptations?Adaptations is a program of the JCC in Manhattan and is funded through the generosity of donors to UJA-Federation of New York. It offers college educated young adults—people in their 20's and 30's with learning disabilities or those needing support—the benefits of a supportive environment as they work towards achieving their life goals. Adaptations offers a wide variety of opportunities, from social activities to ways to improve interpersonal skills, explore career options and more. Do I have to have a disability to be an Adaptations member?Yes. The Adaptations program was created to serve the needs of young adults ages 21 to 39 who have various disabilities including those with high-functioning autism, asperger syndrome, PDD-NOS, non-verbal learning disability, ADHD and various other disabilities. For more information about becoming an Adaptations member, please contact the Adaptations Director. What are the hours of the Adaptations program?Activities and workshops are held at various times. Some workshops are held during the day and some are during the evening hours. There are also weekend programs. If you are working, you can still be an Adaptations member.Do you have to participate in all parts of the program?You don't have to participate in every workshop, event or activity. You can choose your own schedule. The more you attend, the more you will learn from being an Adaptations member.Is there a cost for the Adaptations program?Adaptations is currently a free program open to members. There are some workshops and sessions where you must pay to attend. Please contact the Program Director, if you'd like to make a donation to Adaptations. What if I cannot afford the cost of special activities and trips held as part of the Adaptations program?If you cannot afford the cost of specific activities such as trips to museums or movies, some scholarships are available. You must speak with the Adaptations Program Director for more information. Do I have to reside in Manhattan to be an Adaptations member?Adaptations accepts members from the tri-state area with most members living in one of the five boroughs of Manhattan. Is this program available in other states?Adaptations is being piloted in NYC and it will hopefully be replicated in other states soon. How do I refer a friend?If you'd like to refer a friend, just tell them to email or call the Program Director. How do I contact Adaptations Staff?Click here to contact the Adaptations staff. How do I contact the employment specialist?If you are an Adaptations member and need to contact the employment specialist, go here. What if I forget my user name and/or password?If you forget your user name and/or password, go here. Do you provide transportation to your programs?No. When programs take place outside of the JCC, we give complete instructions on how to travel. Sometimes, we meet as a group beforehand and travel together. How can I register for a program?You must be an Adaptations member to register. To become an Adaptations member, please contact the Adaptations Director here. Once you are an Adaptations members, you can check specific programs via the Events & Happenings calendar. You are then asked to RSVP to the Program Director if you will be attending. Do I have to be a member of The JCC in Manhattan to attend programs?No. You have to be an Adaptations member to attend programs. Where are the programs held?The programs are held at The JCC in Manhattan. Go here for location and travel directions to The JCC. Do I need to register in advance?If you are interested in attending a specific program once you are an Adaptations member, you must contact the Adaptations Director. Are there programs for parents?There are special workshops and talks and a parent support group for Adaptations parents that are planned annually. |
